When Solid Surface or Laminate Is the Smart Call
Solid surface and laminate countertops cost less than stone, and in the right room they are the better choice. About a third of Dearborn's occupied homes are rentals, according to Census-based housing data, and many homes have basement kitchens, laundry rooms or second kitchens that do not need quartz. These materials give a clean, durable top for a fraction of the cost, and they are lighter, so older cabinets carry them easily.
Solid surface
Solid surface, best known by the Corian brand, is acrylic or polyester resin with mineral fillers. The color runs all the way through, so light scratches can be sanded out, and pieces are joined with nearly invisible seams. Integral sinks and coved backsplashes can be molded in with no seam for grime to collect. The downside is heat: solid surface can scorch or warp from hot pans, so trivets are a must. Angi's 2026 guide puts solid surface at about $1,500 to $9,000 for a project, with an average around $3,000, or about $50 to $150 per square foot installed.
Laminate
Laminate is layers of decorative paper and resin bonded to a particleboard or MDF core. Modern laminates do a convincing job of imitating stone and wood, and they can be ordered with integrated backsplashes and rolled front edges. HomeGuide lists laminate at about $20 to $80 per square foot installed, or about $600 to $3,200 for an average kitchen. Laminate cannot be repaired well once chipped or burned, and the core swells if water gets into a seam or the sink cutout, so careful sealing at the sink is critical. Undermount sinks are generally not recommended with standard laminate; drop-in sinks are the norm.
Prefab or custom
Big-box stores sell prefab laminate in fixed lengths, which works for a straight run. Custom laminate and solid surface tops are made to your exact dimensions, with mitered corners and scribed edges that follow uneven walls. In a 1940s Dearborn kitchen with walls that are not square, a scribed custom top usually fits much better than a cut-down prefab piece.
Good fits for these materials
- Rental units and two-flats, where cost and quick turnover matter
- Basement and second kitchens used for big family gatherings
- Laundry rooms, mudrooms and utility sinks
- Kitchens being updated before a sale
- Bathrooms with an integral solid surface sink
Care
Use cutting boards and trivets on both materials. Clean with mild soap and water; avoid abrasive pads on laminate. Small scratches in solid surface can be buffed out, while laminate damage generally means replacing that section.

Solid Surface & Laminate Countertops Questions
Is solid surface better than laminate?
Solid surface costs more but lasts longer, can be repaired by sanding and allows seamless integral sinks. Laminate is cheaper and fine for lighter-use spaces, but chips and burns are permanent.
Can solid surface take a hot pan?
No. Solid surface can scorch, discolor or crack from direct heat. Use trivets for anything from the stove or oven.
Can you put an undermount sink in laminate?
Standard laminate is not well suited to undermount sinks, because the exposed core at the cutout can absorb water and swell. Drop-in sinks are the usual choice. Solid surface handles undermount and integral sinks well.
How long do laminate countertops last?
With reasonable care, laminate can last many years, but it shows wear sooner than stone. Water getting into seams or around the sink is the most common reason laminate fails early.
