Granite for Kitchens Where the Stove Never Rests
Granite countertops are cut from quarried igneous rock, and their biggest advantage in a cooking-heavy kitchen is heat tolerance. Granite formed under intense heat and pressure, so a hot pot set down for a moment will not scorch it the way it can scorch the resin in quartz. It is also very hard and resists scratching from everyday knife slips and cookware. For households where the range runs from morning to night, granite is a practical choice.
Picking a slab
No two granite slabs are alike. Colors run from near-solid black and white to heavy movement in browns, golds, grays and blues, and the price follows. Angi's 2026 guide lists popular options from about $30 to $60 per square foot for slab material like Ubatuba and Absolute Black, up to $70 to $100 for stones like Blue Louise. Because the look varies, we recommend seeing the actual slab before it is cut. We lay out where the sink, cooktop and seams will fall on that slab so the best part of the pattern ends up where you will see it most.
Sealing and upkeep
Granite is porous to varying degrees. Lighter, more open stones can absorb oil or wine if spills sit, while dense dark granites absorb very little. We seal granite at installation, and most homeowners reseal periodically. A simple test: put a few drops of water on the surface, and if they darken the stone within a few minutes, it is time to reseal. Clean daily with mild soap and water, and avoid vinegar, bleach and abrasive cleaners that can dull the sealer over time.
Weight and older cabinets
A 3 cm granite slab is heavy, and a long kitchen run can weigh several hundred pounds. Many Dearborn kitchens have cabinets that are decades old or have been patched after leaks at the sink base. Before templating, we check each box for loose joints, soft bottoms and level. If a cabinet needs reinforcing or replacing, we tell you before the stone is cut, not after.
Grades and price
HomeGuide's 2026 guide puts installed granite at about $50 to $80 per square foot for entry-level stone, $80 to $150 for mid-grade and $150 to $250 for exotic slabs. An average 30 to 40 square foot kitchen runs about $2,400 to $6,000 installed. Darker or rarer colors, honed or leathered finishes, and upgraded edges add cost. The written estimate lists each of these lines separately.
Granite and older homes
Plenty of kitchens still have speckled granite from an earlier update. If your existing granite is solid but dated, replacing it is straightforward. If you have granite tile counters with grout lines, we remove the tile and the underlayment and install a full slab in its place.

Granite Countertops Questions
How much do granite countertops cost?
Angi's 2026 guide says most granite projects run $2,000 to $4,000, with an average around $3,250. HomeGuide puts the installed price at about $50 to $250 per square foot depending on grade. We price your kitchen after measuring.
Can I put hot pans on granite?
Granite tolerates heat far better than quartz or laminate, and a brief hot pan will not scorch it. Repeated extreme heat in one spot can still stress the stone or the sealer, so a trivet is still a good habit.
How often does granite need sealing?
It depends on the stone. Light, porous granites may need resealing every year or so, while dense dark granites may go much longer. If water darkens the surface within a few minutes, reseal.
Is granite out of style?
Busy speckled patterns are less common in new kitchens, but granite with subtle movement, solid blacks and leathered finishes are widely used. The material's heat resistance keeps it popular in kitchens that cook a lot.
